“People working together, expanding possibilities.” - Our Vision

Mawarra has been operating in the West Gippsland region since 1959 when it commenced operation as the West Gippsland Retarded Children’s Centre. Initially operating as a Day Training Centre, support was provided to seven school aged children with intellectual disabilities.

In 1961 the Centre was appropriately titled “Mawarra” which means “a happy place”. By 1971 Mawarra was also providing adult services and in 1990 the Day Training Centre was transferred to the Department of Education as a Special Developmental School. Since 1990 Mawarra has solely provided services to adults with a disability delivering Support Services and Workshop activities.

Currently Mawarra delivers Support Services to over 70 clients and also operates three Australian Disability Enterprises providing supported employment opportunities to over 28 employees.

Located at Warragul, in West Gippsland, approximately 100km east of Melbourne, Mawarra services clients and supported employees in an area bordered by Poowong, Bunyip, Neerim South, Moe and Mirboo North. (see map)

Australian Disability Enterprises

Mawarra operates three businesses manufacturing commercially accepted products or providing specialist services of the highest possible quality.  Providing supported employment opportunities for individuals with a disability, Mawarra assists in promoting the skills and abilities of all supported employees.

Funded by the Commonwealth Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Mawarra’s Australian Disability Enterprises are:

  • Country Kitchen Catering
  • Jigsaw Industries
  • Waratah Grounds Maintenance

Mawarra Opportunity Shop

In 1961 the Mawarra Opportunity Shop began operation, initially open on a few days per week, from a number of rented premises in its first few years.  With the purchase of land in Palmerston Street, Warragul and the great assistance from local Apex Clubs who built the shop for Mawarra, 1967 saw the Mawarra Opportunity Shop open the doors of its permanent retail outlet which it still currently operates from.

The Opportunity Shop currently has over 50 volunteers working in either the shop or the sorting centre, where the generous donations of goods are processed for sale.  Since its inception the Mawarra Opportunity Shop has generated over 2 million dollars in sales and has provided much needed financial assistance to Mawarra to ensure quality services are provided to clients and supported employees.

Mawarra is committed to continuing to provide quality services.
